Never pay over $10 for a standard 6ft HDMI cable. Monster Cable, through major retailers such as BestBuy, Radioshack, Target, and even WalMart, would like you to believe that expensive HDMI cables make a difference. They even offer a $200 8-foot HDMI cable. Cheap HDMI cables are just as effective as the expensive ones (source: cnet), for a more scientific test (but not real world), see Gizmodo.

A cheap HDMI cable will work fine for most lengths under 30 feet because HDMI is a digital technology. Digital means the signal is transferred as binary (1s and 0s) which makes error correction possible. Error correction requires an extra data packet for verifying that the previous packet was correct. The HDMI spec (PDF, 2MB) does require error correction and you can read an interpretation of the HDMI spec's error correcting at Ars Technica.
