I remember a few years back when picking out a TV for my parents that Sony HDTVs were considered the picture standard to beat. Although an in-depth CNet review states that black levels are lighter than might be desired, this 2011 model Bravia KDL-55EX720 still does well in the picture category overall. It's not bad to look at, either - the minimalist aesthetics give off a classy vibe, and the matte screen reduces glare to keep it looking good in a variety of lighting conditions.
There's no built-in wireless connectivity, but you can add a wireless adapter with the USB port. Regardless, you can still access streaming content on this HDTV with a standard Ethernet connection (and if you have that as an option, wired connections generally offer faster buffering than wireless anyway). It'll do the standards, including Hulu Plus, but also does a variety of unique widgets like NPR. It browses the Web, and it's DLNA compatible, so you can stream your own content as well.
The most unique feature on this TV is an "energy-saving presence sensor" that first turns off the screen and finally the TV if it doesn't detect movement for a certain period of time. That'll come in handy if you're the type to fall asleep during movies.
"No, I didn't fall asleep watching Black Hawk Down! I just like sleeping on the couch 'cause it's so comfortable! See? The TV's not even on!"
Aside from the aforementioned review, you can
check out CNet for calibration settings to optimize the image.

$150 price drop on this Sony Bravia KDL-55EX720 and the lowest price ever by $41. While you can certainly get a 55-inch set for less than slightly over a grand, this set gets great reviews for picture quality and overall appearance, and it comes with a few nifty features other TVs don't, namely a sensor that detects whether you're even there watching. Convenient power-saving feature...or sinister spy tool? Maybe I should re-read 1984 to see if I'm okay with this...

Best price we've ever seen on this Sony Bravia KDL-55EX720 3D LED Backlit HDTV, and $177 off the next best price. In fact, right now when you put in our $179 coupon, the total comes out to about $10 less than TigerDirect said it would. $10 isn't a bunch of cash relative to the overall cost of the TV, but you can always buy a nice 6-pack and toast to yourself finally beating THE MACHINE (or the 'tubes...whichever you prefer).
