Lenovo X120e release date: 2/22/2011 for US distribution. Unfortunately, it looks like the X120e is currently on backorder from Lenovo (where you can ususally find it for the cheapest price. We'll keep you updated on the latest deal for this netbook-ish ThinkPad whenever its back in stock.
The Lenovo ThinkPad x120e laptop is the successor to the venerable X100e which went through quite a few hardware improvements before it became popular. The little ThinkPad that could is packed with the latest tech in the form of AMD Fusion APUs and is very comparable to the HP dm1z or the IdeaPad S205, both of which are 11.6-inch ultraportable laptops/netbooks.

The x100e is a peculiar laptop, despite its obvious netbook roots and features (lack of optical drive, minimal input/output ports), Lenovo consistently insist that the ultraportable is a full feature laptop.
Initially released earlier 2010, the ThinkPad x100e was met with mixed reviews as the Single-Core Athlon Neo MV-40 was rather underwhelming in performance, although it was better than Intel Atom offerings of the time, the x100e's battery life and pricing points was not competitive. Flash forward to today, and the x100e is now equipped with better processor offering and better pricing. Here are some noteworthy specifications from the x100e:
-
AMD Athlon/Turion Neo processors, Single-Core & Dual-Core option
-
MV-40 Single-Core 1.6Ghz, L335 Dual-Core 1.6Ghz, and Turion 1.6Ghz L625 Dual-Core.
-
Lenovo wireless b/g/n network card
-
Integrated Radeon HD 3200
-
Chiclet-style full keyboard
With ThinkPad built quality and a great full keyboard along with a trackpoint (for the Thinkpad fanatics), the x100e easily stand out from other offerings, especially with their CPU/GPU platform of choice.
While the ThinkPad x100e retains the usual annoying placement of the Fn key vs. the standard Ctrl key, you now have the option of swapping the keys in BIOS settings. Beyond this little set back, the x100e is hands down one of the best keyboard for laptops in this class (price and size). You will typically be very hard-pressed to find similar typing experience on a 11.6-inch netbook, ultraportable, or laptop.
Alternatives to the Lenovo x100e
We currently don't recommend anyone buying the Single-Core MV-40 as it is a mediocre processor, though if all you want is web browsing and video streaming, the MV-40 will be perfectly okay. Instead, we highly recommend splurging for the Turion as it has a more advance features with better battery life performance.
If you're on the fence about the ThinkPad x100e, a similar configured laptop that you should definitely consider is the HP dm1z, which can be found with some nice and current HP dm1z coupons. Previously equipped with the much newer AMD Athlon II Neo (Nile) platform and faster Radeon HD 4225, the dm1z is now updated with the even better AMD Fusion line of APUs with discreet-class Radeon graphics, giving you significantly better performance and battery life when compared with the now old generation Athlon Neo/Turions (not to mention blowing away any Intel Atom based ultraportables).
Because of this, if the AMD Nile or Fusion platform is released on the x100e, we would highly recommend the netbook as a purchase candidate. We can only hope Lenovo decides to continue the x100e line and upgrade its capability with AMD's new ULV processors.
