Brand new Y480 with Ivy Bridge is now only $949 fully loaded with an also new Kepler GT 640M. It'll be able to handle modern games at native resolution without a sweat. Ship date is a bit long, but we expect Lenovo will ship most units a week or two early, YMMV but that's what we've seen/experienced with new Lenovo releases.
Do you know how the SSD + HDD work together? I saw that and had to blink...This seems like a killer deal but I may wait a couple weeks to see what the competition offers...
Hey coleman, sorry for late reply. it's basically a hybrid style hard drive with a SSD. Look up reviews on the Seagate Momentus XT and I believe it'll be similar in terms of performance. I'm going to do a little research to figure out the exact drive/manufacturer in question. The only 1 TB drive with SSD that I know of is the OCZ Revo, but I doubt they will be using such a dated tech. HP currently offers a 15-inch dv6 with similar spec but option of a faster GT 650M with the option of a 32GB mSSD drive, so that's fairly similar too.
I would guess the SSD is used with the mSATA port. Plus, the 640M is actually the 640M LE (underclocked version) http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/y480_tech_specs.pdf
Yeah I saw the specs on the mSATA port, so it probably is that vs a hybrid drive (way cheaper). As long as the LE version of the GT 640 isn't a rebranded version of the GT 550M/555M then I think we're good to go. I'm a bit disappointed they didnt try to stuff the 650 or 660 into the Y480. Maybe later.
is the GT 640 LE a deal breaker for folks? I thought this was a great deal. I need a lappy for school in August, and these ship times make me wonder if I should make a hard deadline in June or so.

The Y480 209388U config just dropped by another $50 today, bringing it down to the sub $800 price mark for a newly released Quad Core Ivy Bridge laptop. Pretty sweet deal for a 14-inch gaming laptop.

This laptop does not have a real NVIDIA 640m card. Lenovo is not advertising correctly. It is the inferior 640 LE. Check the specs. It's not any where near the new Kepler stuff. Basically on par with the last model (Y470) or a 555m.

This is one of the cheapest Ivy Bridge Core i7 laptop we've seen yet! Ship date is a bit long but we expect build-time to speed up and base on our experience, Lenovo does ship these a week or two early (basically ASAP as they are build). Now $849.99, previously hovers around $1,000.
