At around dollar per gigabyte, solid disk drives are finally in the mainstream domain. Thank goodness for 2011 (vs 2007 pricing). If you want to boot into your system and launch your proggies faster, a SSD, especially as a cheap boot drive option such as this Solid 3 60GB can be a worthwhile investment (supplement it with your 3 terabyte mechanical hard drive).

This OCZ Solid 3 SSD is at the lowest price we've ever seen it by $15 thanks to a $25 mail-in rebate. It reads and writes around half a GIGABYTE per second when connected via SATA 6Gbit. Nice price on this OCZ Solid 3 SSD with SandForce SF-2281, solid speeds for a cheap price. The 60GB one is now just $100 from Newegg after rebate. Supports for SATA 6 Gbps, giving you max read and write of 500 Mbps and 450 Mbps, respectively.
