Laptop Buying Guide

If you want to buy a new laptop, the first thing to decide is whether you want to get a Windows laptop (some people say "PC") or one of Apple's MacBook laptops?

If you want a Mac, check out the latest prices for all MacBook, Macbook Pro, and MacBook Air laptops here. We check and update those prices daily.

If you want a laptop with Windows operating system (new Windows 7 is best), think about what size you need. Here are a couple factors to consider when deciding which size to get.

  • What size laptop have you used in the past? - Note: If your current laptop is very old, you might want to visit a store to see and feel the new sizes in person. For example, an old "15-inch" laptop might have been 15.4-inches and not widescreen. If you were to get a new 15.6-inch widescreen model, it might feel a lot bigger than you are comfortable with.
  • How much will you have to carry it around? - If you plan to take your laptop everywhere, to the office, back to home, to a coffee shop, to your friend's house, etc...you might want a laptop 13-inches or smaller. They'll be lighter and easier to get in and out of your laptop bag or backpack or purse. However, if you're just going to use it at home and leave it on your desk and never move it, then there's not too much downside to choosing a larger laptop if you prefer.
At the top of this page, you can choose to see laptops of only a certain size with the [Filter: Screen Size] dropdown menu.

Now, you know this question was coming...What's your budget? If you have an unlimited budget and you want the latest and greatest components, you'll want to look for laptops with Intel's new Core i3, Core i5, or even the most powerful Quad Core i7 processor. If you want to save a little money and you don't have very specific laptop performance needs, getting a laptop with a Dual Core or Core 2 Duo processor will be a little cheaper.

Also, don't be afraid of choosing a laptop with an AMD processor. AMD is a company that competes with Intel, and their processors are very high-quality too. But, mostly because Intel is the most popular brand name, similar laptops with AMD processors will be slightly cheaper than those using Intel processors. Case in point: the HP dv6 laptop series. The dv6t models have Intel processors. The dv6z models use AMD and are slightly cheaper.
