Google Chrome OS Netbooks Guide

Google Chrome OS netbooks promise to be cheap, small, and fast. But has the Apple iPad buried any desire for a cheap Google netbook?

Announced on November 19, 2009 and expected to show up in the second half of 2010 Google's Chrome OS is slated to run on a variety of netbooks. (For those unfamiliar with the term Netbook, they are essentially cheaper and smaller than a laptop).

  • Chrome netbooks will feature full sized keyboards and bigger trackpads than current netbooks.
  • Google's Chrome OS will be the primary operating system on these netbooks, despite earlier speculation that Chrome might be installed as a secondary operating system in addition to Windows, Ubuntu, or Linux.
  • Although there's not a list yet of the brands and models of netbooks that will ship with the new Google Chrome OS, the presenter used an Asus Eee PC for the demo and a Google rep used the word "clam shell" when describing the types of computers Google is focusing on. So be ready for good deals to pickup an Asus Eee PC netbook with Google Chrome OS on the cheap.

Techradar is claiming they found some of the specs of the first Google powered Netbook: 10.1-inch multitouch screen with 64GB SSD based on the NVidia Tegra (CPU+GPU platform).

Chrome OS Netbooks VS Apple iPad

Feb 01

With the announcement of Apple's iPad it's clear that Apple and Google are on a course for competition. Google's Chrome OS Netbooks will compete directly with Apple's iPad for the market of devices that fit between a smartphone and a laptop.

Google's currently betting on cloud computing with their Chrome OS netbooks while Apple seems to be innovating on the user experience with their Apple iPad. Google's Chrome OS is in a strong position because it will be made to work on a variety of devices. If Apple's iPad becomes a major success, Google can find a hardware partner to place Chrome OS on a touchscreen tablet and compete directly with Apple's iPad.

Google Chrome OS netbooks are expected in the second half of 2010 and will be cheaper than the Apple iPad, retailing for around $300.
